【摘要】:Thistestmethodassignsanempiricalvaluetotherelativeamount,fineness,andcharacterofclaylikematerialpresentinthetestspecimen.Aminimumsandequivalentvaluemaybespecifiedtolimitthepermissiblequantityofclaylikefinesinanaggregate.Thistestmethodprovidesarapidfieldmethodfordeterminingchangesinthequalityofaggregatesduringproductionorplacement.Note28212;Thequalityoftheresultsproducedbythisstandardaredependantuponthecompetenceofthepersonnelperformingtheprocedureandthecapability,calibration,andthemaintenanceoftheequipmentused.AgenciesthatmeetthecriteriaofPracticeD3666aregenerallyconsideredcapableofcompetentandobjectivetesting/sampling/inspection/etc.UsersofthisstandardarecautionedthatcompliancewithPracticeD3666alonedoesnotcompletelyassurereliableresults.Reliableresultsdependonmanyfactors:followingthesuggestionsofPracticeD3666orsimilaracceptableguidelineprovidesameansofevaluatingandcontrollingsomeofthosefactors.1.1Thistestmethodisintendedtoserveasarapidfield-correlationtest.Thepurposeofthistestmethodistoindicate,understandardconditions,therelativeproportionsofclay-likeorplasticfinesanddustingranularsoilsandfineaggregatesthatpassthe4.75-mm(No.4)sieve.Thetermx201C;sandequivalentx201D;expressestheconceptthatmostgranularsoilsandfineaggregatesaremixturesofdesirablecoarseparticles,sand,andgenerallyundesirableclayorplasticfinesanddust.Note18212;Someagenciesperformthetestonmaterialwithatopsizesmallerthanthe4.75-mm(No.4)sieve.Thisisdonetoavoidtrappingtheclay-likeorplasticfinesanddustbelowflakyshaped4.75to2.36mm(No.4to8)sizedparticles.Testingsmallertopsizedmaterialmaylowerthenumericalresultsofthetest.1.2Thevaluesstatedininch-poundunitsaretoberegardedasstandard.ThevaluesgiveninparenthesesaremathematicalconversionstoSIunitsthatareprovidedforinformationonlyandarenotconsideredstandard.1.2.1Regardingsieves,perSpecificationE11Section1.2,x201C;thevaluesstatedinSIunitsshallbeconsideredstandardforthedimensionsofthewireclothopeningsandthediameterofthewiresusedinthewirecloth.Thevaluesstatedininchpoundunitsshallbeconsideredstandardwithregardtothesieveframes.x201D;Whensievemeshsizesarereferenced,thealternateinch-pounddesignationsareprovidedforinformationpurposesandenclosedinparentheses.1.3Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
